Akiyotaka, Mounting a horse
Fearlessness
In 1876 one of the last great battles between white men and prairie Indians took place. Among the Indian warriors was Crazy Horse who had been given a special medicine bundle from his friend and medicine man, Woptura, that would protect him from bullets during battle. Before the battle began, Crazy Horse rode back and forth in front of the American soldiers, shouting: ‘Hokahé! Hokahé!’, loosely translated as ‘today is a good day to die, because everything is there that I love’. The Americans fired bullet after bullet at Crazy Horse, but none found their mark. After this the battle proper began and was decisively won by the Indians due to the lack of ammunition on the American side. Crazy Horse was fearless. He had conquered even the fear of death. Today is a good day to look your fears into the eyes.
